Sunderland Council have ‘signed death warrant’ for city centre after approving parking price hikes

Speaking after a meeting of Sunderland City Council’s ruling Cabinet today (7th September) which approved hikes to city centre parking charges and scrapping the ‘Free After 3pm’ scheme, Lib Dem councillor and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Heather Fagan said:

“This pig-headed and short-sighted decision is nothing more than pure greed from fat cat Council bosses more interested in lining their pockets than making Sunderland city centre competitive with places like retail parks, The Galleries, Dalton Park and the Metro Centre.

“The Council should be doing more to keep the city centre alive, thriving and a competitive shopping and leisure destination. Instead of supporting our independent shops, pubs and restaurants, Council bosses could well have signed a death warrant for Sunderland by making it more expensive to park here.”
