People in Sunderland fed up of chaos and infighting

Commenting on Sir Keir Starmer’s announcement that he is resigning as Leader of the Labour Party and then as Prime Minister in July, the Liberal Democrat Leader of the Opposition on Sunderland City Council Paul Edgeworth said:

“People in Sunderland are fed up of yet more chaos and infighting instead of tackling the huge problems in our country – massive hikes in food costs and energy bills which people struggle to afford, not being able to access an NHS dentist and the lack of support for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, to name just a few.

“Labour MPs on Wearside will hope that a new leader will solve all their problems. But local people won’t forget or forgive the fact that none of our city’s Labour MPs or senior councillors did the right thing and spoke out against Keir Starmer when he was cutting the winter fuel allowance, taking freebies and gifts, hiking taxes for small businesses or trying to cut support for disabled people.

“Whatever happens next, it is clear from May’s Sunderland Council election results that Labour are finished in Sunderland. Only the Lib Dems can win against Reform UK in our city and provide a moderate, common-sense alternative – whether that’s on Sunderland Council or at the next General Election, whenever that comes.”
