New hope as Council set to decide on stopping National Glass Centre being demolished
Commenting on the publication of documents today (11 August) by Sunderland City Council which confirm that the ruling Cabinet is going to decide in the coming weeks on whether to prevent the National Glass Centre being demolished, Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition Councillor Paul Edgeworth said:
“This is a ray of light in the campaign to save the National Glass Centre. Blocking the ability for the University to demolish the Glass Centre is the right thing to do and will allow time for the Council, Government, University, charities and campaigners to get around the table to find a way of keeping the Glass Centre open under new ownership.
“Councillors from all political parties agreed months ago that the current building shouldn’t be demolished. Shamefully, the Council has had to be dragged kicking and screaming to this point.
“The whole city will now be hoping that ruling Reform UK councillors do the right thing and agree to stop the building being quickly knocked down by the University.
“We then need local MPs, the regional Mayor and the Government to get off the fence and put their full weight behind finding a future for the National Glass Centre outside of the University’s grasp."
