Liberal Democrats are celebrating becoming the official opposition on Sunderland City Council after a successful set of results at the Sunderland Council elections on Thursday 2nd May 2024.

Whilst Labour still run the Council, the Lib Dems are now the official opposition party across the city with more councillors than any other opposition party.

Commenting, Lib Dem Group Leader Paul Edgeworth said:

"It is clear that across Sunderland, Washington, Houghton and Hetton the Lib Dems are the only party that can challenge Labour bosses who have run the Council badly for decades. It's a Lib Dem or Labour fight in Sunderland - and we are determined to provide a real alternative to the same old Labour party who take our city for granted."
