Liberal Democrat leader of the opposition on Sunderland City Council Paul Edgeworth is challenging Sunderland's Labour MPs to publicly withdraw their support for Prime Minister Keir Starmer and back a leadership contest.

After years of Tory failure, sleaze and scandal, people were hopeful things would get better under Labour. But following the winter fuel, disability benefits and Mandelson scandals, people in Sunderland have lost all trust in the government and in Keir Starmer - as shown in the devastating local election results for Labour in the city last week.

Now Labour politicians are too busy fighting amongst themselves in Westminster instead of delivering for communities on the cost of living and the NHS.

The Liberal Democrats are urging Lewis Atkinson (Sunderland Central), Sharon Hodgson (Washington & Gateshead South) and Bridget Phillipson (Houghton & Sunderland South) to break their silence, stand up for the people of Sunderland - who voted massively to reject Labour in last week's local elections - and acknowledge that the country deserves better leadership than this.

Councillor Paul Edgeworth, Liberal Democrat leader of the opposition in Sunderland, said:

"The cost of living crisis is causing hell for families across our community on Wearside but this Labour Government is just navel-gazing.

“Enough is enough. People across Sunderland deserve so much better than this.

“While families struggle to pay their bills and wait months for basic healthcare, the Prime Minister's party is entirely focused on its own survival.

"Our local MPs should listen to local people's anger and must have the courage to say Starmer must go so the Government can refocus on delivering change and better services for this country.”
